Shock Horror: Honest Politicians!
Watch any political debate on television, and you will see a familiar performance. A question is asked—complex, nuanced, perhaps impossible to solve in a two-minute slot—and the politician instantly snaps into action. They have a rehearsed statistic. They have a three-point plan. They speak with absolute, unwavering confidence, never pausing for breath, never showing a flicker of doubt. They sound perfect. And usually, they are talking complete nonsense.
We have become so accustomed to the "slick politician"—the one who can pivot from a question about healthcare to a pre-scripted sound bite about the economy without blinking—that we have forgotten what a normal human conversation sounds like. We mistake speed for competence. We mistake confidence for truth. We are not that politician.
If you are looking for someone who has a magic wand for every problem, or a catchy slogan for every crisis, we are not your candidates. We don't have a team of researchers feeding us lines through an earpiece. We don't have a polished answer for every single scenario that might arise in our community. But here is what we do have: Integrity.
It sounds old-fashioned, doesn't it? But in today’s political climate, integrity is the only currency that matters. When you ask either of us a question, we will give you an answer. Sometimes, that answer will be the one you want to hear. Sometimes, it will be the hard truth that resources are limited or that a solution will take time. And sometimes—shock horror—the answer will be: "I don't know."
We know we aren't supposed to say that. In politics, admitting ignorance is seen as blood in the water. But we believe it is a sign of strength. When we say "I don't know," it means we are not going to insult your intelligence by making something up on the spot. It means we are not going to promise you a timeline we can't keep just to get you off the phone. But "I don't know" is never the end of the sentence. It is followed by: "But I will find out."
If we can't solve your issue quickly, we won't pretend that we can. We won't tell you the cheque is in the mail or that the council is "looking into it" if they aren't. We will tell you exactly where we stand. We will tell you the obstacles we face. And we will promise to work relentlessly to overcome them.
We have had enough of being charmed. We have had enough of being handled. We have had enough of politicians who are so terrified of looking weak that they refuse to be honest. We may not be the fastest talkers in the room. We may not have the sharpest suits or the loudest voices. But when we look you in the eye and tell you something, you can take it to the bank.
We offer you no magic tricks. We offer you something much rarer: the truth.
